About the Project

The Mission Central Parish is leading the way as we invite community groups, organizations, and local churches to create 1,111 blankets for veterans by Veterans Day 2020. If you would like to make a blanket, wonderful! You can purchase your fleece at the store or we will have kits available for purchase. And join us in spreading the word! We believe that this can be a huge way to engage our community in a way that says thank you to veterans.
MATERIALS
scissors
straight pins (to hold the fabrics together if you want)
4 yards of fleece - 2 yards each of two different patterns/solids.
We recommend using patriotic colors and/or military fleece.
Tie Knot

Line up the two fabrics, right sides OUT. Anti-pill solids are FUZZY on the right side.

Trim the two pieces so that they are the same size.

Using a piece of cardboard, trace and cut a 5-inch square from each of the four corners.

Lay a yard-stick across the fabric, 5 inches from the edge so that you know how far in to make your cuts.

Cut fringe on all four sides of the blanket. Cut through both layers of fabric at the same time. Fringe pieces should be a little wider than the width of your finger. Cut in from the edge 5 inches. Leave your blanket laying flat on the surface, with all fringes lined up.

Work from left to right around the blanket (or right to left if you are left handed), tying in the same way you would a shoe lace or a balloon (depending on the look you like best).
Braided

Line up the two fabrics, right sides OUT. Anti-pill solids are FUZZY on the right side.

Trim the two pieces so that they are the same size.

Using a piece of cardboard, cut a 2 ½ inch square out of each corner and you can pin the blankets 2 ½ inches in keeping both fabrics together.

Using the cardboard, pin the blankets 2 ½ inches from the edge, holding both fabrics together or lay a yard-stick across the fabric, 2 ½ inches from the edge so that you know how far in to make your cuts.

Cut fringe on all four sides of the blanket. Cut through both layers of fabric at the same time. Fringe pieces should be about the width of your thumb or about ¾ of an inch.

Fold each fringe piece, top and bottom together, approximately 1/3 of the fringe and snip a small slit in the middle of the tab going through both parts.

Start at a corner, you are going to work clockwise (left) Except for the beginning and end always work with top and bottom tabs together.

Put Row 2, both tabs, through only the bottom of Row 1 Tab and twist row 2 as pulling it through so that the bottom tab is on the top against the top of the blanket

Put the top tab of row 2 and the top of tab of row 3 against each other. Pull both tabs of row 3 through the slit in both of the tabs of row 2. Twist row 3 as pulling it through so that the bottom tab is on the top against the top of the blanket

Continue around the blanket repeating step 9.

When you reach the end of the blanket, tie and tuck the first and last piece together.
